Step 5-Strand Tests
Strand tests are 10 question assessments designated by grade level. For example, G3-N/NS refers to the strand test for Grade 3 Number and Number Sense strand test.
Teachers will assign strand tests to students throughout the year as a way to gather additional information about his/her strengths and weaknesses. Students may take an assigned strand test unlimited times. However, the student will see previously delivered questions on the third attempt. Strand tests are only available for students that have taken their CAT test for this school year.
Teachers should set up classes (groups) of students for reporting purposes. Please refer to Step 2-Creating Classes for Reporting Purposes before assigning strand tests to students.
To assign and administer strand tests:
- Login to the VARDT site.
- Locate your school’s folder on the left sidebar and click on Assignments

- Assign strand tests to individual students by clicking on the red circle below the desired strand. The red circle button will be then be filled in green.
- If you choose to assign a particular strand test to all of the students in the group, click once on the name of the test at the top of the column.
- Click on the Confirm Changes button.
- You must click the Save button (not on your keyboard) to save the changes you have made.
- When you are ready for the students to take the strand test you have assigned, you will create a new test session under Test Delivery just as you did for administering the CAT test.
- Students will need to launch the Secure Browser on their laptop in order to enter the test session number and access the strand tests you have assigned.
To view the individual strand tests reports:
- Follow steps 1-5 above.
- Locate the Show Scores drop-down menu and choose which scores you want displayed (Most Recent, Best, All).
- Depending on what option you chose in step 2, the test score icon for the completed strand test (an underlined number indicated the number correct out of 10) will appear to the left of the filled-in green circle.
- Click that underlined number to access the student score report. The report allows the teacher to view the student’s score, the questions, and answers chosen by the student.
