Summer 2011 Options
What is the expectation for the Region 1 Learning Council in relation to a summer technology event?
VSTE could help sponsor something like this locally. There would be a charge for participants.
Local Technology Conference Options (we want to avoid duplication)
EdTech- Feb. 2-3, 2011 at Randolph Macon College in Ashland
Does this group want to work on focusing on getting administrators to attend Feb. 2 for the administrator strand? CVC no longer organizes this to provide any funding. We could be advocates for the admin strand.
DOE- Nov. 30-Dec. 2, 2010 in Roanoke
VSTE- Dec. 5-7, 2010 in Hampton
Bernajean Porter- Digitales- digital storytelling
Monday Dec. 6 has a leadership strand
Next Region 1 Learning Council planning meeting

Items for discussion
- Debrief on Oct. 4th session
- Henrico and Goochland will share tentative plans for Nov. 16th Region 1 event
¨ Group input
- Initial discussion on Jan. 19th Region 1 event to guide planning team (Hanover, Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Richmond)
- Summer 2011 options
Discussion:
Wendy and Harold shared the thinking behind the framework for this year’s regional professional development series.
- Focus on learning and innovation skills supported by integration of Information, Media and Technology Skills
- Communication and Collaboration
- Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
- Creativity and Innovation
- Sessions will involve active participation by participants throughout, often across divisions
What would Region 1 events look like if we focus on Information, Media and Technology Skills blended within the framework?
John Hendron (Goochland)- Example: Scratch- lends itself to STEM- went to conference this summer and held a week long workshop funded by Longwood for Goochland teachers and some others from surrounding counties. The program encourages remixing- mimics the culture we see on YouTube. Uses Creative Commons (relaxed fair use).
The group agreed to continue with the original plan for the year.
Do the schools allow teachers and students to access You Tube?
Goochland allows teachers, but not students. No other school divisions represented at this time allow access.
How do we utilize the 90 minutes? Use people inside and outside school divisions- focus on the big picture of the topic and then focus on examples of how this is implemented with students. Include pedagogy and examples for elementary, middle and high school.
Conversations should take place with mixed groups from multiple school divisions. Possibly extend the time to get back with our own school divisions to have discussion. It is fine for groups to stay for an extra 30 minutes for discussion if they choose to do so.
What if we ask the folks coming to provide good examples of communication and collaboration? Dr. Cannaday could provide exemplars of 21st century communication and collaboration. Table groups will assess examples based on the presentation. Groups should focus on practical application of the tools that can be taken back and used in the schools.
We will divide into groups across divisions for tables. Chesterfield will organize the groups for Oct. 4th. Harold needs the names for nametags by Friday, Sept. 24th. Can invitations be sent in a form other than Publisher? Word or pdf would be best for all school divisions.
Notes for Dr. Cannaday:
- Use a timeline of communication and collaboration in education.
- Discuss pedagogy of good communication and collaboration for elementary, middle and high.
- What are companies and families doing now for communication and collaboration? What does this look like?
Can we look at calendars to plan future sessions (next year) around the professional development days so that we could provide a whole day? The group determined that this would be difficult to coordinate.
What money do we have to be able to pay speakers? Work around a range of 3,000-4,000 for a speaker. The $1200 each school division pays helps to cover the food and a portion of a speaker. Ken Kay was $7,000. Dr. Cannaday is not charging us. Region 1 may look very different other than the first and last sessions. They are using in house speakers for their full day sessions. Can we subtract the food and facility from the budget to see how much we have left to spend on speakers?
Possible speakers (these may be good speakers for the end of the year as they are big names)
Creativity and Innovation:
- Sir Kenneth Robinson- expert on creativity and innovation (possibly Skype in from England)
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving:
- Dan Myer- math teacher
- Chris Lehman (would be good for all topics)- one of the most influential people in instructional technology
- Slideshare presentations for Chris Lehman
Who comes from each division?
Most divisions brought different groups each time. Hanover brought the same 15 last year. This year we will have a core group of 10 that will come and the other 5 slots will rotate from our core group of 25.
Three school divisions will look at each topic for the planning of Nov. 16th and Jan. 19th events (structure larger school divisions with smaller school divisions that do not have as many people for representation).
What do we want when we look at this? It might be that the group of three is planning to get someone else to come in or someone from their own school division or local university. Plan the broader picture talk and then narrow it down to what this looks like in our school divisions (or elsewhere). It should allow for time at the end for discussion at the end.
What is our purpose and intended outcome for this year? Learning and Innovation Skills are the focus for this year. Concentrate on the skills that fall under this part of the umbrella. Look at how we can take this information back and apply it in your school division.
Include this in the invitation. When you come to this event, you are bringing examples of the topic and how this may look in your school division. Concern- we are in different spots on this. We want to stay open to the new knowledge.
Should the invitation come from the PD21 Superintendent’s Group rather than from Chesterfield?
Henrico: Reflective friends- (starts first week in Oct. and runs all of Oct. and Nov.) bring in outside consultants- looking for 21st century skills in the classroom. They have a 21st century skill rubric and lessons are based on this. Ten teachers are selected and ten are picked out of a hat. Observe and meet with teachers and students on a data report on this. We can contact Debbie if we would like to come and observe this process.
December 11, 2009
- Presentations were shared by Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Hopewell, Powhatan, Richmond, and Sussex. Ideas were shared which included district models for 21st Century teaching and learning, implementation stages, self-assessments, 21st century tools, lesson planning for the 21st century and wonderful examples of 21st century skills in the classroom. Wendy Krickovic (Henrico) did a masterful job of organizing the share session and keeping us on time. If you missed today, you MUST check at our Region One blog sometime next week to see the great ideas that were shared today.

- Each district received one complimentary copy (thank you to Linda Hyslop (Hopewell)) of the book Leading 21st Century Schools. If your district was not represented today, email me back and let’s make plans for you to pick up your district’s copy of this book. We will be participating in a Region One Book Study using this a resource. If there is more than one person representing your district, you may wish to purchase more books on your own. Corwin Press is the publisher and Lynee Schrum and Barbara Levin are the authors.
- The next Region One Professional Development will be held on January 20th at University of Richmond from 5:30 pm.- 7:00 p.m. featuring Ian Jukes (Director of the InfoSavvy Group and national spokesperson on Digital Literacy). Check our Ian’s website The Committed Sardine to get a flavor for his presentation: http://www.committedsardine.com/. The session will begin with an opening reception at 5:30. Presentation is from 6-7:30 PM. Ian Jukes will not charge a fee for his speaking engagement that evening. Each Region One district will share in the costs for the venue and food (we will double the food from our Summit). The cost will only be $300 per district — a REAL BARGAIN (checks made out to Chesterfield County Public Schools and sent care of Donna Dalton, 4003 Cogbill Road, Richmond, VA 23234). Each district can invite up to 15 participants of their choice. Audience suggestions included district leaders, model teachers, technology integrators and others. The invitation for this event will go out electronically on Monday to this group and to the Region One Superintendents. Please connect with your Superintendent next week to make plans for invitations. We need each district to participate and share in the costs. INVITATIONS AND MORE INFORMATION WILL BE FORTHCOMING ON MONDAY. Donna Dalton (Chesterfield) will be responsible for sending out invitations to the same guests who were invited to our Opening Summit.
- Our next Region One PD Learning Council meeting has been changed to February 26th. The location has changed, too!. We will not be at the Fulghum Center in Chesterfield, but instead at our Central Office located at 9900 Krause Road, Chesterfield, VA, 23832. I will send out a meeting request for this meeting using Outlook. This building is located at the intersection of Ironbridge and Krause Road. We will meet from 8:30 to noon. Sandy Lynch (Powhatan) and Linda Hyslop (Hopewell) will be leading the meeting. We will focus our efforts on our plans for a 21st Century Summer Academy and begin the work on our book study. Please bring your district calendars with you and/or make notes to the blog as to your thoughts about our goals, audience and time. Henrico has agreed to be our host sometime during Summer 2010!
