Noted this Webinar Opportunity in the T.H.E Journal—FYI only
21st Century Skills
Date: October 28, 2009 at 11:00 AM PDT (3:00 PM EDT)
Duration: One hour
Sponsored by: T.H.E Journal and Speak Up in partnership with Hewlett-Packard
Schools and districts are struggling with how to appropriately incorporate into instruction 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, teamwork and technology literacy. How much value and importance these skills have in job preparedness is just as confusing. For the past two years, Speak Up surveys have polled students, teachers and parents about these skills—and we’ve learned that each group has a different take on the value of these skills.
Julie Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow, the nation’s leading education nonprofit organization that facilitates the annual Speak Up surveys, will present the data findings and moderate a panel discussion with students, teachers and administrators from various school districts.

Thanks to all who were able to participate in our last Region One PD meeting. This Region One PD Team is truly gaining momentum as we collaborate together.
For those who may have missed the meeting, our blog has been updated to reflect our agreed up goals for this team:
Develop continuous awareness of skill needed for the 21st Century.
Develop a list of 21st Century skills for all students in Region 1.
Pool resources for regional professional development.
Share and collaborate on creating best practice.
Our next steps include the following (indicates point person on team):
Investigate Region 1 becoming a P21 affiliate. (Donna D.)
Investigate ISTE/NET standards (NETS-A, NETS-T, NETS-S) (Sheree S. and Tom )
Host a share fair for Region 1 (Linda T. and Wendy K.)
Book study on “Leading 21st Century Schools” (Linda H.)
Investigate regional PD sessions (Donna and Harold)
Summer Region 1 joint conference on 21st Century Skills (Whole Group)
Linda Hyslop is calling Corwin Press to see if we can get review copies of the book: Leading 21st Century Schools, Harnessing Technology for Engagement and Achievement, Lynne Schrum and Barbara B. Levin, Corwin Press. We will be using this for our book study for the Region One PD Team. Linda T. and Debra have a place reserved on our blog for this book discussion—we are leading with 21st century skills, for sure!
We’ve set up our next meetings (all here at the Fulghum Center) from 8:30-11:30:
December 11
Hold Share Fair (Wendy will send guidelines for sharing including time allotments)
Discuss next Regional PD (Ian Jukes–January 20—SAVE THE DATE) and discuss audience and districts’ roles
Update of Partnership for 21st Century Skills affiliates training
Determine date for Summer Region 1 Joint Conference on 21st Century Skill
January
Finalize plans for Ian Jukes regional professional development
Begin book study
Update group of investigation of ISTE/NET standards
February 9
Planning meeting for the summer conference;
Discuss next Regional PD (Jason Dorsey—April 14—SAVE THE DATE)
Wendy is keeping a historical log of our meetings and accomplishments and will post that to our blog. This will help Dr. Evans inform the other Region One Superintendents of our work when they next meet in December.
Linda T. is also working on the blog so that we can have the ability to post documents to the blog including the link to the Dr. Bosher video, Ken Kay’s presentation, and other supporting documents from individual districts. Please remember to keep the blog updated with your most current information.
Remember to bring your district’s current summer calendar to the next meeting so that we may set the date for the SUMMER REGION 1 JOINT CONFERENCE ON 21ST CENTURY SKILLS!
We’re off and running as a collaborative team,
Donna

Great news! Ian Jukes (Director of the InfoSavvy Group and national spokesperson on Digital Literacy) has agreed to present (gratis!) in the evening on January 20th for a second Region One professional development session . Also, Jason Dorsey (CEO of Golden Ladder Productions and national spokesperson) has agreed to present at a substantially reduced rate of $2500.00 in the evening on April 14th for an additional Region One professional development session. Both events will be held at the University of Richmond’s Jepson Alumni Center.

Dr. Tim Tyson will be the keynote speaker at EdTech in Ashland, Va on February 3, 2010. Edtech is an excellent, inexpensive 2-day conference focusing on instructional technology and 21st century skills. On February 3rd, there are focus sessions for administrators.
“The first day, February 3, will feature Dr. Tim Tyson, who was named one of Georgia’s High Performance Principals by State Governor Sonny Perdue. A former principal at Mabry Middle School in Cobb County, Georgia, Dr. Tyson has been referred to as the “Pied Piper of Educational Technology” by The School Library Journal. His innovative use of technology to maximize student achievement has been featured in a variety of national education magazines.”

It was great to see many of you at our last meeting in Chesterfield. I’m looking forward to hosting you along with Pete Gretz and Tom DeWeerd in Goochland for our next meeting, likely in May.
Two websites I thought I’d share for places to get free and helpful information on the integration of twenty-first century skills is learncentral.org and classroom20.com.
The first is a series of free, online webinars. The second is a Ning portal for the exchange of ideas. Both are free.
Two other organizations I am involved with offer great PD as well. The first is local and is called VSTE (www.vste.org), and the second is ISTE (www.iste.org). I’d invite any of you to join our new VSTE special interest group focused on innovation in education.
Finally, I share content for teachers in Goochland through my blog:
