Activity #1- The Escalator Challenge

  • Watch the video clip presented by the facilitator.
  • Work with your partners to answer the driving question.
  • Use the resources provided on the laptop to help you answer the question (Region 1 folder > Escalator Challenge folder).
  • THE ANSWER HAS BEEN POSTED!! Click here for an answer to the escalator challenge: How long does it take to get to the top of the down escalator?
  • Other media that encourage critical thinking and problem solving are also available on Dan Meyer’s Website.

Activity #2- The Cat Race Challenge

  • Scratch Resources This link provides background information on the product and sample projects.
  • Launch the Cat Race Challenge file (Region 1 folder > Cat Race Challenge).
  • Follow the directions provided by the facilitator.





Activity #3- The Duckling Challenge

  • Make Way for Ducklings
  • Google Lit Trips
  • Double click on the KML file in the Ducklings folder.
  • Help Mr. Mallard by clicking on the place holders A-N.
  • Consider the following questions:

  • SOL 1.6 Science – Where is the best place for Mr. and Mrs. Mallard to raise the ducklings? Why?
  • SOL 2.5 Science – Make Way for Ducklings was written in 1947. If the Mallards were searching for a home today, what differences in the environment would they notice and how would that impact the choice they make?

    We used the timer at the bottom of the videos to compare and determined it took the same amount to go to the top of the escalator and the stairs – 21 seconds.
