Flexible Use of Staff Development Time in HCPS
In addition to centrally planned staff development and convocation, teachers are required to participate in at least 17 hours of CSIP- related staff development during the 2011-2012 year. While there are several days built into the district calendar for the purpose of staff development, other possibilities for the use of time exist so that designated staff development days may be used for clerical and planning purposes. Considerations include:
• While all teachers are likely to be engaged in individual professional growth throughout the year (reading books, taking classes, dialoging with peers about instructional techniques, etc.), this 17-hours of professional development time should be organized around teams of teachers and directly related to the goals contained in the school’s Continuous School Improvement Plan.
• A Staff Development Plan for the year must be included in each school’s Continuous School Improvement Plan. The Staff Development Plan may vary for groups of teachers within the same building. For example, one grade level/department may be involved in a CSIP-related Study Group; another small group may be using a portion of the total hours to participate in a school division PLC model, another grade level/department may be involved in ongoing content-related training that supports the goals of the school’s CSIP; and still another small group may be working as a small team to analyze student work and make instructional decisions based on trends. In each of these instances, this work should be noted on the school’s Staff Development Plan at the start of the year.
• When Faculty Meetings are designed in such a way that teachers participate in meaningful staff development that relates to the school’s CSIP, this time may be counted toward the minimum of 17 hours. This time must be documented the school’s Staff Development Plan.
• The Staff Development Planner at each school, with the oversight of the principal, will be responsible for managing the log of Staff Development time for teachers.
