The Preamble- VoiceThread

The students in Mr. Conway’s 7th grade social studies classes were asked to create a presentation using the free online application- VoiceThread

Their assignment was  2 part.  First, they had to to recite the preamble and find pictures that appropriately represented its meaning.  All of this was recorded into VoiceThread.  Then, they listened to each other’s presentations and commented on them through text, audio recording and video recording.  Here is an example:

Capzules.com allows for students to create interactive time lines.  Students can add dates, sound, pictures, and summaries describing the important events.  Here is a link to a time line created by a student in Ms. McInnis’ 7th grade Social Studies class.

Web 2.0 Stupeflix

Stupeflix.com is an online video creation tool that students can access for free.  The example above is a student creation based on the Virginia Standards of Learning USI. 3a-b.  The movie centers around the Inuit culture and highlights how the Inuit were able to use their environment in order to meet their basic needs.  Stupeflix is best for its simplicity and is a valuable web 2.0 resource.

Blogging in the classroom

bloggingsmMs. Hedstrom incorporates blogging into her daily teaching.  Blogging allows for students to communicate in near real time, and inspires them to write since they are sharing their work with a worldly audience.  Blogging also gives a voice to those students who may be shy to participate verbally in the classroom.  You may access Ms. Hedrom’s blog by going to:

Google Earth and the Native Americans

Students had to use their 3-D mapping and global skills in order to pinpoint certain locations within North America where each of the 5 Native American Tribes described in the Virginia SOL resided.  They needed to also include a picture and description of each climate and a couple interesting facts about each tribe.
