Google Advanced Search

Many of us begin to search the web by typing a term or two in the google  search box- either by going to google.com or using the Google search bar in our Internet browser. If we’re lucky, we may know how to use a Boolean search using and, or, and not or know how to put quotation marks around our query terms to further narrow down our search. Google makes searching easy if you use the Advanced Search link to the right of the text box.

Clicking on Advanced Search, automatically places delineators in the search boxes. For instance, in the example below, notice that the search is for the exact words, “dogs as pets” but does not include any resources with the word terrier in it. You can see that Google has added the quotation marks and a minus sign for not, just by typing the words in advanced search.

The following videos describe ways to use Google Advanced Search to help you and your students become better Internet searchers.
