ACTIVITY- Genetically Modified Food Jigsaw

Essential Question:

How would you assess these sites’ validity?

  1. GMO Safety
  2. The Campaign.org
  3. The Center for Food Safety

Process:

  • Begin asking the group which of the following if evaluated would show relevancy, accuracy, reliability, and authority. Show the following items to your group.
    1. Newpaper
    2. Tabloid
    3. Classic book
    4. Book that is less than classic
    5. Newscast
    6. Picture
    7. Forgery
    8. Encyclopedia
    9. Magazine
    10. Zine
    11. Several websites-  real and shams (see bibliography)
  • Break up into 3 small groups.
  • Assign each small groups, one of the websites below..
  • Demonstrate info:website name in Google
  • Give the groups 10 minutes to evaluate the site and prove their site is correct or incorrect.
  • Remind them of the three guiding questions:
    • Is the website relevant?
    • What is the authority for the website?
    • Is the website accurate and reliable?
  • Groups report back to the entire group what they found
  • When the activity is complete, assess the things teachers/students already knew or discovered as they were evaluating their website. Help the group notice that the MLK site hosted by Stormfront has a lot of legitimate people linking to it because schools use it the same way we are using it.
