Small Group Differentiated Reading Instruction

Beverly Tyner was invited to the forum at the special request of elementary instruction as part of their staff development planning for this week.

The goal of this professional development is to provide teachers with the knowledge base and the strategies necessary to be successful in increasing the reading levels for all their students. I believe that teachers, not programs, teach children to read.

What are the best research-based strategies that every classroom teacher should incorporate into the literacy block? How do I differentiate instruction to meet the wide range of readers in my classroom? How do I teach reading and still have time to teach social studies and science? These are just a few of the questions that I address in my training.

Providing strong intentional reading instruction for all students is not always an easy task, but if we are sincere about “leaving no child behind” this lofty goal is worth the effort.

Then this is the session for you! Learn how to use American artifacts to facilitate student inquiry and creative writing. Learn how to create a year-long literary video podcast project to document and archive the personal histories of your students. Explore the Storycorps project online and additional multicultural resources to tell the story of America. And, finally, learn how to acquire relatively cheap, old pieces of Americana for your classroom.

Voice Recording in Pixie: Let Your Students’ Voices Be Heard!

As we strive to incorporate 21st century skills into our classroom, let your students’ voices be heard! The Pixie program is a fun and simple way to achieve your literacy learning goals. This will be a hands on session in which participants will play a part in an elementary literacy lesson and as a group, create a voice-recorded video storybook.
